Cemeteries
In 2021, the Department of Public Works and Municipal Facilities formally took over the responsibility for the management of operations, maintenance, and general upkeep of the Town's cemeteries. Working as a team, the Department approaches this responsibility through a variety of resources. It takes many devoted and caring people to ensure that loved ones are laid to rest respectfully and peacefully within our cemeteries. We work hard to preserve all of the burial grounds for many generations to come. Our Department Assistant handles a great deal of the arrangements for our interments and the preservation of records for future reference. Our Building and Grounds Assistant Foreman handles many interments along with the DPW Director with assistance from the Town's volunteer Cemetery Sexton for cremation burials. Local contractors assist with full grave excavations and burials. Lastly, we work with our Town’s GIS Manager in the Planning and Economic Development Department to update our digital mapping of the Pillsbury Cemetery.
There are 8 cemeteries in the Town of Londonderry. All cemeteries are routinely monitored to make sure the contracted mowing is completed, barrels are emptied, trees and shrubbery are trimmed, plantings are appropriate, and all rules and regulations relating to cemetery control and maintenance are followed.
Of the 8 cemeteries, only 3 are active, and 1 is available for plot sales and future expansion. All others are historic and closed.
